Taj Madikeri Resort & Spa: Luxury Engulfed by Rainforest

I awakened to a melody to see mists roll over the thick canopy through the large glass window of my room. It wasn’t my biological clock that woke me up, nor was it my alarm. My alarm doesn’t have such a soothing sound. What woke me up was a whistle, an incessant mellifluous whistle of a Malabar Whistling Thrush that was up early in the morning and singing gleefully. I couldn’t trace it anywhere despite my efforts, and all that I heard was the soothing sound. Who wouldn’t want to wake up to the whistle of a bird every day? I walked out of my room to see more mist and a light drizzle intermittently cover up the gorgeous panoramic frame of the thick rainforest, where I had been cocooned since the previous afternoon.

I was at TajMadikeri Resort & Spa in Coorg, the coffee country of southern India. Nestled amidst 180 acres of rainforest, the property is an apt place to indulge in luxury and wellness. Spread over 30 acres, Taj Madikeri is perched more than 4000 feet above sea level and shrouded by spices, eucalyptus and more than 200 species of plants. Built in traditional Kodagu architecture, the cottages and villas blend well with the serene surroundings and landscape. Located just 9 Kms away from Madikeri town, Taj Madikeri is where one can lose themselves to the enchanting frames of nature while engulfed in the warmth of your cosy cottages and villas.

Upon arrival, even though the gesture of the team at Taj Madikeri was full of warmth, what garnered my attention was the lobby of the resort. The neatly decked up lobby with subtle colours and lovely furnishings offered a spectacular panoramic view of the greenery below. Mists rolling over the green canopy and the surrounding hills were an absolute stunner. I gazed at that frame in oblivion for long before the camera came out. This is probably the most beautiful frame at the property and I was told that it is a favourite with the guests. The amphitheatre surrounded by a lotus pond is another highlight at Taj Madikeri. A photographer's delight, the amphitheatre is a beautiful one, with lotuses and water lilies accentuating the charm of the place. The premise also houses a herbal and butterfly garden.

The buggy ride in the drizzle gave a glimpse of the vastness of the property with the neatly laid out pathways winding through lush greenery and leading to the cottages, villas and restaurants. I stayed in a spacious Premiun Villa, which offered a bird’s eye view of the valley and rainforest below. With sloping roofs, tasteful furnishings, a large living space, a modish bath, a fire place and extensive wooden décor, the villa was absolutely a delight to stay in. The views of the surrounding greenery through the bay windows on three sides was another charming ascpect of this lovely villa. It was also fully equipped with all the facilities such as bath amenities, cotton robes, tea/coffee makers, wifi, in-room dining, mini bar etc. to make the stay a comfortable one.

The resort has other cottages and villa options too to choose from, which includes Superior cottage, Deluxe Cottage, Luxury Pool Villa and Presidential Nirvana Suite 3 Bedroom. Superior and Deluxe cottages have Kodava inspired architecture with spacious bed spaces and large windows offering views of the rainforest. The Luxury Pool Villa has an internal pool which becomes the cynosure of every eye as soon as you enter the villa. The heated plunge pool has a fully retractable roof and is surrounded by large windows offering views of the lush greenery. The villa has a separate living space and a bed space apart from the internal pool. The high ceiling and wooden pillars are the other major attractions in this type of villa. The Presidential Nirvana Suite is ideal for three families and comes with living area, dining area, three bedrooms and an outdoor heated lap pool.

When the hungry tummy growled, Mr. Jose Thachil, the executive chef was always there to the rescue with exceptional dishes and a mix of cuisines. Be it Pandi curry with Akki roti or Lime chicken broth or Pokchoy wrapped sea food dim sum or Topu Palaya or Carrot payasam or Jinga nisha or Koli nallamullu barthad or Bella paputtu, the chef and his team offered delicious dishes one after the other and I happily relished them all. Pandi curry (a Coorgi pork curry) and Bella Paputtu (a dessert made of rice and jaggery) were my favourites.

The resort has five dining options which also include a bar. Ferntree is the major dining area which is an all day dining space which serves South Indian, Continental and Middle Eastern cuisines. Dew restaurant adjacent to the infinity pool offers farm food and is where the guests can indulge in delicious platters. While Nellaki offers the local spicy Kodava cuisine, Pool Side Grill dining area offers sizzlers and barbeques with views of the swimming pool and greenery across it. Hive bar with eclectic décor and world music is one of the best lounge bars in Coorg.

Jive Spa at Taj Madikeri offers numerous wellness experiences inspired by ancient healing treatments of India. I had a soothing ayurvedic body massage that lasted for an hour and was an absolute refresher. With the finest oils and commendable services, the experience relaxed both my mind and body. Ayurvedic therapies, Signature experiences, Beauty treatments and Yoga & Meditation are some of the experiences that the spa offers. Some of the Signature experiences are Gudda bath (a traditional Coorgi bath massage), Udhanna (an experience to cleanse the skin) and Samattva (a Yoga treatment to relax the mind and body, improve concentration levels and reinstate positive energy). The Indian therapies include Pehlwan Malish (a traditional dynamic massage), Ventoz (using heat in a glass to relieve sore muscles) and Pada Mardana (a traditional foot massage). Some of the Ayurveda therapies are Abhyanga, Udvartana, Mukhalepa, Kati Basti and Pichu that the spa offers. Jiva Spa also offers numerous other therapeutic experiences beyond these.

When you wish to go beyond the therapies and body scrubs, the infinity pool overlooking the green landscape and distant hills is a nice place to relax. There are also two jacuzzis adjacent to the large semi circular shaped pool. Apart from the infinity pool, Taj Madikeri also has a lap pool next to Grill dining area. The resort offers a gymnasium and fitness centre with all the modern facilities to keep you in the best of the health. The resort also has a banquet and conference room- The Soiree Hall to cater to the requirements of an event or a function. The retail boutique shop, Taj Khazana offers a wide range of products to choose from.

As much as I loved strolling through the premises of the resort and cocooning myself in my cosy villa, I also wanted to experience some adventure. In the evening we went on a nature trail with Mr. Nitin, the naturalist at the resort. A well informed naturalist; he offered a plethora of information regarding the flora and fauna in the surrounding regions. It was a lovely long walk of 2-3 hours in the forest stretch adjoining Taj Madikeri. Geared with rain jackets and leach socks, we went past tall trees, wet cobwebs, chirping birds, dripping ferns, mulberry fruits, croaking frogs and a whole lot of greenery to soak ourselves in the lap of nature listening to Nitin’s stories and guidance related to the forest. We ended the trail at Bacterium, a frog pond inside the property premises which is known to be home to more than forty species of frogs. The team at Muddy Boots also offers a half day trek to the nearby hill top which offers a bird’s eye view of the whole place. While I had to skip the trek due to incessant drizzle, I was led to the Zip-liner by the team. Claimed to be the longest zip liner in South India, it was my first experience clinging on to the liner and zipping past trees, lake and paddy fields. Though it lasted only a bit more than a minute, that was a thrilling experience and I was quite tempted to try that again. There is kayaking facility too in the lake within the property.

At Taj Madikeri, the guests also get introduced to the world of Coorg and Kodavas at Conservatory, which is a living chronicle of the land of the Kodavas, the people of Coorg. Colonel P.C.Muthanna, the man behind this conservatory took us through the history, culture and heritage of Coorg and its people. The place has a huge display of photographs, stories and collectibles related to Coorg and offers a great insight into the life of Kodavas. In the evening the lobby was witness to some wonderful Kodava dance performance by locals. The large pottery studio is where the guests can try their hand at learning and creating clay souvenirs.

Taj Madikeri is an ideal weekend or three day getaway to dip in luxury, rejuvenate with therapies, relish delectable cuisines, wake up to the chirping of birds and soak in the lap of nature. This is an ideal place where one can relax, unwind and lose amidst the luxuries of nature.

The property is located 9 Kms from Madikeri in Galibeedu. Madikeri is 4.5- 5 hours away from Bengaluru by road. Kannur has the nearest international airport, followed by Mangalore. The nearest major international airport is at Bengaluru, and the closest major railway station is at Mysuru. One can either drive down or book taxis from Bengaluru and Mysuru to Madikeri.

What To Do And Where To Go During An Odisha Tour

What you don't usually find elsewhere in India is what you can probably find in the state of Odisha, located along the country's eastern coast, with a coastline of about 485 kms. The state in itself is easily accessible, and its major airport is in Bhubaneswar, Odisha’s capital city.

Odisha has been given many names until now – some call it India’s sports capital, some know it as a place rooted in deep history and heritage, some refer it to as the “green state” as it is calm, serene and laid back, while others refer it as the humble abode of Lord Jagannath, where the annual Rath Yatra festival is celebrated.

However, the state is known as “India’s Best Kept Secret” which is gradually being explored by tourists from near and far, who are visiting Odisha to soak in its enchanting beauty.  While on one side, you can find a radiant flaunt of heritage and history in the monuments of this state such as Udayagiri and Khandagiri caves, on the other side, Odisha is home to exotic beaches, significant shrines, breathtaking forts, sparkling waterfalls, sprawling biodiversity, vibrant ethnicity, and most importantly friendly people.

Although it’s almost impossible to list down every tourist spot in Odisha, here is a compilation of a few enchanting places that you can explore through Odisha Tour Packages.

1) Dhauligiri

The great Kalinga war took place here, and Dhauligiri also witnessed King Ashoka’s transformation into a Buddhist follower. The Buddhist teachings still reverberate on the walls of Dhauligiri. Well, if the tales sound interesting, this place should form a part of your must visit list in Odisha. What you are going to take back from here are the beautiful sight of the Shanti Stupa, fantastic learnings of the Buddhist culture, and some wondrous natural views of the Dhauli hills.

2) Temple Hopping in Bhubaneswar

If you’re a religious person, Bhubaneswar has lots to offer with more than 600 temples spread across the city. You might not be able to cover all of them in a couple days, but you ought to visit a few important ones such as Lingaraj temple, Ram Mandir, Iskcon Temple, Rajarani Temple and Mukteswar Temple to pay obeisance and receive blessings. Even if being religious is not how you want to spend your days in this city, it is still suggested that you visit these places. One would definitely be enthralled gazing at the architectural beauty and uniqueness which each of these temples exhibit.

3) Puri Temple & Beach

A tour of Odisha is never complete without taking a trip to the land of Lord Jagannath. After visiting the Puri Temple, head straight to the Puri Beach to rejuvenate yourself by the beach. In case you are looking for more serenity, then take the Puri-Konark Marine Drive route, and make your way towards the Ramchandi Beach. The journey is interesting with gorgeous scenic views laced all along.

4) Wildlife escapade

Odisha is a land of exotic birds, crocodiles, tigers, deer, elephants, dolphins, turtles and many more species. While Bhitarkanika sanctuary is where you’ll spot saltwater crocodiles, Gahirmatha marine sanctuary is where the Olive Ridley turtles pay their annual visit. If you really want to enjoy the wild side of Odisha, and don’t have much time to travel to far-off places, then do visit Nandankanan Zoological Park and Chilika wildlife sanctuary, as both of them offer wonderful wildlife moments.

Apart from these, one can visit Koraput for an ultimate ‘surreal trip’, or head to Raghurajpur village for a hands-on experience on Pattachitra art, or join any of the eco-tour nature camps for a memorable stay and an adventurous experience. Odisha truly and definitely has a lot to offer for visitors.

A Walk through Jonker Steet, Malacca, Malaysia

Every Friday, Jonker Street in Malacca turns into a bustling one with street vendors and shops selling myriad things such as handicrafts, souvenirs, antiques, local food and a whole lot of other things. This happens every weekend from Friday to Sunday when this otherwise normal street turns into a concoction of local cuisines, crafts and art. This also makes it an ideal place for shoppers, street strollers and for those who like to sip their coffee and see the world go by.   

Jonker Street is located in Chinatown in the heart of Malacca, a UNESCO World Heritage site. It lies along the Melaka river, and adjacent to Dutch square which has colonial structures such as Stadthuys (clock tower), Christ Church and a many more which are from the 17^th and 18^th centuries. The colourfully lit and decked up cycle rickshaws are a great way to see the Dutch square and surrounding areas.  While the Dutch colonial rulers lived in the adjacent Heeren Street, Jonker Street was later taken over by Peranakans (Bab Nyonyas), an ethnic group who were a mix of Chinese settlers and local Malays.

Apart from the innumerable shops and cafes, Jonker Street is flanked by colonial buildings from the 17^th century on either sides. Cafes, restaurants, art galleries and souvenir shops fill up the whole street apart from the road side vendors who sell everything from electronics to food. While buying from the street vendors, make sure to haggle hard before fixing on a price. Despite the crowd and numerous shops, the street still holds a quaint charm with its old colourful structures which have a blend of Portuguese, Dutch and Chinese architecture, and have been pretty well kept over the years. The restaurants serve a wide range of Asian cuisines, and are definitely a delight for every foodie. The street also has a few pubs and hotels. Some of the attractions while visiting Jonker Street include Cheng Hoon Teng temple, Baba Nyonya museum and Hokkien Huay Kuan temple.

Though the street is more popular at night, it is equally active during the day on Saturdays and Sundays. It is open from 6 PM to 10 PM on Fridays and from 11 AM to 10 PM on Saturdays and Sundays.

Melaka River Cruise: A Delightful Experience

The water glittered in shades of purple, pink and blue, and the boat meandered its way past the décor, buildings and art. It seemed like I was in trance mode with everything bright, beautiful and beaming around me. If I take off the colours, it may seem like am in one of the narrow canals of Venice. But, I wasn’t. I was amidst all the beautiful colours and art of Melaka and cruising through river Melaka.

The UNESCO World Heritage site of Melaka in Malaysia is known for its beautiful colonial buildings and structures which are spread across. Museums, temples and the rich cultural heritage of Malacca is ubiquitous in every corner of this beautiful city. However, beyond these, what left me amazed was the wonderful Melaka river cruise at night.  River Melaka which was used by Portuguese to invade the place in 1500s, also separates Red Square area from Chinatown.

The ideal time to go on this cruise is after sunset, when the lights are lit and colourful. The boat takes visitors on a 45 minute ride of 9 Kms that goes under numerous bridges that connect Red Square area with Chinatown.  Some of these are Pasar bridge (1500 CE), Tan Kim Sen bridge (1862 CE), Chan Koon Cheng bridge (1908 CE) etc. While the oldest one is a wooden bridge, the newer ones have beautiful arches with modern technology and lighting.

Apart from the bridges, the river is flanked by historical structures and landmark buildings which are a testimony to Melaka’s heritage. These include Pre-war buildings, Red building, Bastion Middleburg, Water wheel, Church of St. Francis Xavier, Kampung Hulu mosque, Kampung Morten, Jonker street, Shore Shopping gallery etc. These structures showcase the quaint charm of Melaka as the boat cruises past its vibrant heritage.

Mural art is displayed across the walls of buildings all along the cruise, and that is another highlight of this journey. Many of the trees are lit too in shades of blue and pink. While the cruise would give a different perspective during the day, the night cruise is definitely the more preferred and recommended one.

• The cruise boats operate every half an hour between 9 AM and 11:30 PM on all days.
• The charges are MYR 30 for foreigners and MYR 25 for Malaysians.
• Visitors can board from either Dataran Muara jetty or Taman Rempah jetty.

Encore Melaka: Stories of Melaka’s Inheritance

The UNESCO World Heritage site of Melaka is steeped in history and has numerous stories that speak volumes about its culture, heritage and inheritance. Melaka which is also written as Malacca in English, was founded by Parameswara, the last king of Singapura, and later was under the colonial powers of Portuguese. The city has a mix of cultures and a rich history which can be experienced at Encore Melaka.

Encore Melaka is a state of the art theatre which offers an immersive performance taking the audience through history, time and space over a period of more than one hour. With a 360 degree rotating audience platform, 240 meter long stage, geometric roof with concaves arcs made of LED panels and multiple built in hydraulic stages, the experience is an awe-inspiring one. 200 local artists perform a virtual reality that takes the audience through Melaka’s history.

The story line begins with ‘Parameswara’, who came here in the 1400s and founded the kingdom of Melaka. It then moves to ‘Cheng Ho’s arrival’ and heritage of the distinctive Baba Nyonya culture. The other interesting story is that of ‘Six Mothers’ from six different races nurturing a son who eventually brings up a harmonious nation. The story of ‘Pregnant Women’ symbolizes the birth of new Melaka and its next generation. The ‘Wau’ scene shows how Awang, a kite maker ensures the traditions of Melaka are carried forward. The final scene showcases the talent, uniqueness and authenticity that Melaka offers to its visitors.

All stories reflect on how the society embraces diversity, multi culturals, tolerance, peace and harmony. The performance also showcases how Melaka has over the years preserved itself through wars and hardship, to evolve into a peace loving land. The narrations of the stories are in English, Bahasa Melayu and Mandarin.
